Most pet owners in America have the classic pets for company, like cats, dogs, gerbils, fish, etc. But do you know that there is a whole range of exotic pets out there. Of course, it is a matter of personal choice and finances; for make no mistake, some of these pets are pretty expensive.
There are several exotic cats out there for cat lovers; for example the beautiful Bengal Cat is an easily domesticated cat. It gets its exotic genes by virtue of being a cross between a common domesticated cat and an Asian Leopard cat. Some specimen of the Bengal Cat can fetch up to $3,000.
The Ashera is another cat breed that is exotic. It is a combination of African serval, the Asian leopard cat, and a domestic housecat. There is some controversy about the authenticity of this breed but that does not stop interested buyers from forking out $22,000 and more for this cat.
If monkeys are more of your thing then you can get a really exotic primate in the form of the snow macaque. The animal, also known as the Japanese Macaque, is a social animal and you may have to buy more than one because they do not like solitary lives. The snow macaque is a fruit eater. You can get one for around $3500.
Chimpanzees are legally available as exotic pets in the U.S although they are considered an endangered species. Americans have really taken to the chimpanzee and these intelligent primates make for entertaining pets provided you have the space for them and of course, the money. A chimpanzee can cost up to $65,000.
The list of exotic pets is an interesting and long one. Remember, if you decide to have a snake as an exotic pet; be prepared to give it live food.
Exotic pets cost a lot and are therefore a tempting target for thieves. You can be set back by a big amount if they get lost. You should seriously consider exotic pet insurance to see that you do not suffer financial loss in case of theft. Also, these animals may have specialized care and medical requirements. A pet insurance policy that covers these things will enable you to provide a good quality of life for the animals.
